Linux Kernel up to 2.6.21-rc3 net/ipv6/tcp_ipv6.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.21-rc3 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file net/ipv6/tcp_ipv6.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

net/ipv6/tcp_ipv6.c in Linux kernel 2.6.x up to 2.6.21-rc3 inadvertently copies the ipv6_fl_socklist from a listening TCP socket to child sockets, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) or double free by opening a listening IPv6 socket, attaching a flow label, and connecting to that socket.

The weakness was presented 03/22/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1592 since 03/22/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43641 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2007:0347)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156114 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Updated Kernel Packages for Oracle Enterprise Linux 3 Update 9 (ELSA-2007-0436)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33176) and Tenable (43641). See 2979, 33393, 33200 and 35888 for similar entries.
