PHP up to 4.4.4 malloc zip_read_entry integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 4.4.4 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function zip_read_entry of the component malloc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the zip_read_entry function in PHP 4 before 4.4.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a ZIP archive that contains an entry with a length value of 0xffffffff, which is incremented before use in an emalloc call, triggering a heap overflow.

The bug was discovered 03/27/2007. The weakness was published 03/29/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1777 since 03/29/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25099 (Debian DSA-1282-1 : php4 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 4.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33652) and Tenable (25099). Similar entries are available at 35872, 35694 and 35446.
