Buffer overflow in the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4; XP SP2; Server 2003 Gold, SP1, and SP2; and Vista allows local users to gain privileges via certain "color-related parameters" in crafted images.
The weakness was published 04/04/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1215. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24911 (MS07-017: Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925902)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90389 (Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-017)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
