PHP up to 4.4.4 sqlite_udf_decode_binary in sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PHP up to 4.4.4 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects the function sqlite_udf_decode_binary. The manipulation of the argument in with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the sqlite_decode_binary function in the bundled sqlite library in PHP 4 before 4.4.5 and PHP 5 before 5.2.1 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via an empty value of the in parameter, as demonstrated by calling the sqlite_udf_decode_binary function with a 0x01 character.

The bug was discovered 03/31/2007. The weakness was presented 04/05/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-1887 since 04/05/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27759 (Fedora 7 : php-5.2.4-1.fc7 (2007-2215)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12259 (PHP Prior to 5.2.1/4.4.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 4.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33766) and Tenable (27759). See 2920, 2911, 2914 and 2917 for similar entries.
