Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft ASP .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42 does not properly handle comment (/* */) enclosures, which allows remote attackers to bypass request filtering and conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, or cause a denial of service, as demonstrated via an xss:expression STYLE attribute in a closing XSS HTML tag.

The weakness was released 04/05/2007 with Portcullis Computer Security Ltd. (Website). The advisory is shared at procheckup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-7192 since 04/10/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25700 (MS07-040: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (931212) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90401 (Microsoft .NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-040)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (25700), SecurityFocus (BID 20753†), OSVDB (35269†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-15747†).
