A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component Password Protection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
fsck, as used by the AirPort Disk feature of the AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n before Firmware Update 7.1, and by Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.4.9, does not properly enforce password protection of a USB hard drive, which allows context-dependent attackers to list arbitrary directories or execute arbitrary code, resulting from memory corruption.
The weakness was disclosed 04/10/2007 by Landon Fuller with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0734 since 02/05/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/14/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25081 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115539 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2007-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-04-19)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33527) and Tenable (25081). The entries 2870, 33942, 34769 and 34732 are pretty similar.
