Oracle Database Server 10.1.0.5/10.2.0.2 dbms_cdc_ipublish.chgtab_cache CHANGE_TABLE_NAME memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database Server 10.1.0.5/10.2.0.2 (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file dbms_cdc_ipublish.chgtab_cache. The manipulation of the argument CHANGE_TABLE_NAME with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in Oracle Database 10.1.0.5 and 10.2.0.2 have unknown impact and remote authenticated attack vectors, related to (1) Change Data Capture (CDC), aka DB08, and (2) Oracle Instant Client, aka DB11. NOTE: as of 20070424, oracle has not disputed reliable claims that these issues are buffer overflows using a long CHANGE_TABLE_NAME parameter to the DBMS_CDC_IPUBLISH.CHGTAB_CACHE procedure (DB08) and Oracle Instant Client genezi utility (DB11).

The weakness was published 04/18/2007 by Esteban Martinez Fayo with Application Security, Inc. as TA07-108A as confirmed advisory (US CERT). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2114 since 04/18/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56056 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (April 2007 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5357.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33809) and Tenable (56056). Similar entries are available at 3024, 36358, 36279 and 36278.
