A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Tony Cook Imager up to 0.56. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file bmp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the BMP reader (bmp.c) in Imager perl module (libimager-perl) 0.45 through 0.56 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted 8-bit/pixel compressed BMP files.
The weakness was published 05/11/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at imager.perl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2459 since 05/02/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31123 (Debian DSA-1498-1 : libimager-perl - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34010) and Tenable (31123).
