A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word 2000/2002/2003/2004 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file winword.exe. Word (or Word Viewer) in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, XP SP3, 2003 SP2, 2004 for Mac, and Works Suite 2004, 2005, and 2006 does not properly parse certain rich text "property strings of certain control words," which allows user-assisted remote attackers to trigger heap corruption and execute arbitrary code, aka the "Word RTF Parsing Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 02/27/2007. The weakness was presented 05/08/2007 by iDefense Labs with iDefense Labs VCP (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-1202 since 03/02/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 70 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25173 (MS07-023 / MS07-024 / MS07-025: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Allow Remote Code Execution (934233 / 934232 / 934873) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110055 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-024)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5325.
