CRLF injection vulnerability in the ftp_putcmd function in PHP before 4.4.7, and 5.x before 5.2.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary FTP commands via CRLF sequences in the parameters to earlier FTP commands.
The bug was discovered 03/23/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2007 with Shell (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2509 since 05/07/2007. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 46 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67569 (Oracle Linux 3 : php (ELSA-2007-0889)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12564 (PHP Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 4.4.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
