Details
A vulnerability has been found in Foo Labs Xpdf 3.x (Document Reader Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Embedded Font Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The CairoFont::create function in CairoFontEngine.cc in Poppler, possibly before 0.8.0, as used in Xpdf, Evince, ePDFview, KWord, and other applications, does not properly handle embedded fonts in PDF files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted font object, related to dereferencing a function pointer associated with the type of this font object.
The weakness was published 04/18/2008 by Kees Cook (Website). The advisory is shared at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1693 since 04/08/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67689 (Oracle Linux 4 : gpdf (ELSA-2008-0262)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117329 (CentOS Security Update for Poppler (CESA-2008:0239)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at rhn.redhat.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41884), Tenable (67689), SecurityFocus (BID 28830†), OSVDB (44434†) and Secunia (SA31035†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
