Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2, Vista, and Server 2003 and 2008 does not properly assign activities to the (1) NetworkService and (2) LocalService accounts, which might allow context-dependent attackers to gain privileges by using one service process to capture a resource from a second service process that has a LocalSystem privilege-escalation ability, related to improper management of the SeImpersonatePrivilege user right, as originally reported for Internet Information Services (IIS), aka Token Kidnapping.
The bug was discovered 04/17/2008. The weakness was released 04/18/2008 by Cesar Cerrudo with Microsoft as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-1436 since 03/21/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Cesar Cerrudo and been published 7 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36150 (MS09-012: Vulnerabilities in Windows Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (959454)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90490 (Vulnerabilities in Windows Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (MS09-012)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3828.
