A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.25 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Tehuti Network Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the directory notification subsystem (dnotify) in Linux kernel 2.6.x before 2.6.24.6, and 2.6.25 before 2.6.25.1, allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) and possibly gain privileges via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 05/02/2008 by Alexander Viro with Kernel.org (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1375 since 03/18/2008. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32335 (Fedora 8 : kernel-2.6.24.7-92.fc8 (2008-3873)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165690 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:032)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42131) and Tenable (32335). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 3470, 3471, 3494 and 3692.
