Linux Kernel 2.6.21.1 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.21.1 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The VFAT compat ioctls in the Linux kernel before 2.6.21.2, when run on a 64-bit system, allow local users to corrupt a kernel_dirent struct and cause a denial of service (system crash) via unknown vectors.

The bug was discovered 05/23/2007. The weakness was published 05/08/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2878 since 05/29/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30126 (Debian DSA-1479-1 : linux-2.6 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156038 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0705)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.21.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34669) and Tenable (30126). Similar entries are available at 38283, 37214 and 40214.
