Linux Kernel up to 2.6.25 fnctl config

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.25 (Operating System). This affects the function fnctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-16. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IPsec implementation in Linux kernel before 2.6.25 allows remote routers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a fragmented ESP packet in which the first fragment does not contain the entire ESP header and IV.

The bug was discovered 05/07/2008. The weakness was released 05/02/2008 by Dirk Nehring with Kernel.org (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-6282 since 12/10/2007. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592.004 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34032 (Debian DSA-1630-1 : linux-2.6 - denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165690 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:032)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42276) and Tenable (34032). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 3470, 3471, 3494 and 3692.
