Linux Kernel up to 2.x ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c sctp_new null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.x (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function sctp_new of the file ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The sctp_new function in (1) ip_conntrack_proto_sctp.c and (2) nf_conntrack_proto_sctp.c in Netfilter in Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.20.13, and 2.6.21.x before 2.6.21.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by causing certain invalid states that trigger a NULL pointer dereference.

The bug was discovered 06/07/2007. The weakness was shared 06/08/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2876 since 05/29/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25483 (Linux Kernel Netfilter *_conntrack_proto_sctp.c sctp_new Function Unknown Chunk Type Remote DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Denial of Service and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156118 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0488)).

Upgrading to version 2.6_test9_cvs eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16009. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12530.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34777) and Tenable (25483). The entries 2751, 2753, 2756 and 35049 are related to this item.
