A vulnerability was found in libexif up to 0.6.15. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function exif_data_load_data_entry
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the exif_data_load_data_entry function in libexif/exif-data.c in Libexif before 0.6.16 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or execute arbitrary code via an image with many EXIF components, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2007. The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2007 by Sean Larsson (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4168 since 08/16/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67524 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : libexif (ELSA-2007-0501)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119913 (Solaris Libexif Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 0.6.14 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34851) and Tenable (67524). The entry 50862 is pretty similar.
