A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.6.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gssrpc__svcauth_unix
of the file svc_auth_unix.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer signedness error in the gssrpc__svcauth_unix function in svc_auth_unix.c in the RPC library in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.6.1 and earlier might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a negative length value.
The bug was discovered 06/26/2007. The weakness was published 06/26/2007 by DiGiT with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2443 since 05/02/2007. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25574 (CentOS 3 : krb5 (CESA-2007:0384)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118148 (HP-UX Running Kerberos Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02544)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12046. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8950.
