Linux Kernel 2.6.22 usblcd.c lcd_write memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.22 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function lcd_write of the file drivers/usb/misc/usblcd.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The lcd_write function in drivers/usb/misc/usblcd.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.22-rc7 does not limit the amount of memory used by a caller, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption).

The issue has been introduced in 07/08/2007. The weakness was published 06/11/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-3513 since 07/02/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43654 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2007:0940)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156026 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0940)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.22 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35302) and Tenable (43654). Similar entries are available at 3335, 37923, 39393 and 39392.
