A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in libarchive 2.2.3 (File Compression Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file archive_read_support_format_tar.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
archive_read_support_format_tar.c in libarchive before 2.2.4 does not properly compute the length of a certain buffer when processing a malformed pax extension header, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) PAX or (2) TAR archive that triggers a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2007. The weakness was shared 07/10/2007 by Colin Percival with CERT-FI (Website). The advisory is available at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-3641 since 07/09/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25868 (GLSA-200708-03 : libarchive (formerly named as bsdtar): Multiple PaX Extension Header Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35405) and Tenable (25868). The entries 37799, 37795 and 85969 are related to this item.
