A vulnerability has been found in Squirrelmail Gpg Plugin up to 2.0/2.1 (Mail Client Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Help. The manipulation of the argument help
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the G/PGP (GPG) Plugin 2.0, and 2.1dev before 20070614, for Squirrelmail allow remote authenticated users to include and execute arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) in the help parameter to (1) gpg_help.php or (2) gpg_help_base.php.
The weakness was shared 07/12/2007 with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4169 since 08/16/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25873 (GLSA-200708-08 : SquirrelMail G/PGP plugin: Arbitrary code execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 2.1_dev eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5732.
