Mozilla Firefox 3 XUL input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.16, and 3.x before 3.0.1, interprets | (pipe) characters in a command-line URI as requests to open multiple tabs, which allows remote attackers to access chrome:i URIs, or read arbitrary local files via manipulations involving a series of URIs that is not entirely handled by a vector application, as exploited in conjunction with CVE-2008-2540. NOTE: this issue exists because of an insufficient fix for CVE-2005-2267.

The weakness was released 07/16/2008 by Ben Turner Dan Veditz with Mozilla Developers as MFSA2008-35 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43699 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0597)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119095 (Red Hat Update for Firefox (RHSA-2008:0597)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
