IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in IBM DB2 UDB 8 before Fixpak 15 and 9.1 before Fixpak 3 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long DASPROF and possibly other environment variables, which are copied into the buildDasPaths buffer.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2007. The weakness was presented 08/18/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with Application Security, Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4276 since 08/09/2007. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25905 (IBM DB2 < 9 Fix Pack 3 / 8 Fix Pack 15 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36067) and Tenable (25905). See 2960, 3070, 3463 and 3464 for similar entries.
