Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Ancillary Function Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
afd.sys in the Ancillary Function Driver (AFD) component in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2 does not properly validate input sent from user mode to the kernel, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, as demonstrated using crafted pointers and lengths that bypass intended ProbeForRead and ProbeForWrite restrictions, aka "AFD Kernel Overwrite Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 10/14/2008. The weakness was presented 10/15/2008 by Fabien Le Mentec (kyREcon) with SkyRecon as MS08-066 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-3464 since 08/04/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Ruben Santamarta and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34411 (MS08-066: Microsoft Windows Ancillary Function Driver (afd.sys) Local Privilege Escalation (956803)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90462 (Microsoft Ancillary Function Driver Elevation of Privileges Vulnerability (MS08-066)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-066 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45582), Exploit-DB (6757), Tenable (34411), SecurityFocus (BID 31673†) and OSVDB (49061†).
