A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Red Hat Fedora 7. Affected is an unknown code block of the file extract.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in extract.c in star before 1.5a84 allows user-assisted remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via certain //.. (slash slash dot dot) sequences in directory symlinks in a TAR archive.
The bug was discovered 08/21/2007. The weakness was presented 08/30/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4134 since 08/02/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67565 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : star (ELSA-2007-0873)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
