MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.6.2 Administration svc_auth_gss.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.6.2 (Network Authentication Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file svc_auth_gss.c of the component Administration. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The original patch for CVE-2007-3999 in svc_auth_gss.c in the RPCSEC_GSS RPC library in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.4 through 1.6.2, as used by the Kerberos administration daemon (kadmind) and other applications that use krb5, does not correctly check the buffer length in some environments and architectures, which might allow remote attackers to conduct a buffer overflow attack.

The weakness was presented 09/06/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (Sean) with RISE Security (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4743 since 09/06/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27750 (Fedora 7 : krb5-1.6.1-4.fc7 (2007-2066)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115661 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-11-14)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (27750). See 24745, 33454, 34769 and 34694 for similar entries.
