Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
10.0$0-$5k0.00

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and Enterprise Edition 6.0 SP6 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Visual Basic project (vbp) file containing a long Reference line, related to VBP_Open and OLE. NOTE: there are limited usage scenarios under which this would be a vulnerability.

The weakness was presented 09/04/2007 by Koshi (Website). The advisory is shared at securitytracker.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4776 since 09/10/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/12/2017).

A public exploit has been developed by Koshi and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12618. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5630.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36562) and Exploit-DB (4361).
