Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (affected version not known). This affects some unknown functionality of the component SmartHTML Content Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2003 by Brett Moore with Security-Assessment as MS03-051 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0824 since 09/18/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11923 (Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (fp30reg.dll) Debug Function Remote Overflow (MS03-051 / 813360)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11329 (Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions Remote Debug Buffer Overrun Vulnerability (MS03-051)).
Applying the patch MS03-051 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6409. In this case the pattern shtml.dll is used for detection.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13680), Tenable (11923), SecurityFocus (BID 9008†), OSVDB (2800†) and Secunia (SA10195†). Further details are available at vuldb.com.
