Details
A vulnerability was found in hp Photo And Imaging Gallery 1.1 (Photo Gallery Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function filefind::findfile
in the library mfc42.dll. The manipulation of the argument first
with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the FileFind::FindFile method in (1) MFC42.dll, (2) MFC42u.dll, (3) MFC71.dll, and (4) MFC71u.dll in Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) Library 8.0, as used by the ListFiles method in hpqutil.dll 2.0.0.138 in Hewlett-Packard (HP) All-in-One and Photo & Imaging Gallery 1.1 and probably other products, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long first argument.
The bug was discovered 09/14/2007. The weakness was released 09/17/2007 with Shell as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4916 since 09/17/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/04/2025).
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90411 (Microsoft MFC Library CFileFind::FindFile Buffer Overflow Vulnerability - Zero Day).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9129.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36608), SecurityFocus (BID 25697†), OSVDB (37105†), Secunia (SA26800†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1018698†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
