Multiple integer overflows in the imageop module in Python 2.5.1 and earlier allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly obtain sensitive information (memory contents) via crafted arguments to (1) the tovideo method, and unspecified other vectors related to (2) imageop.c, (3) rbgimgmodule.c, and other files, which trigger heap-based buffer overflows.

The bug was discovered 09/16/2007. The weakness was published 09/18/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4965 since 09/18/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30146 (SuSE 10 Security Update : Python (ZYPP Patch Number 4902)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155847 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Python (ELSA-2009-1176)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
