The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/21/2019).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900061 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110090 (Microsoft Excel Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS08-074)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-074 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6598.
