Integer overflow in GDI in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, and Server 2008 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed header in a crafted WMF file, which triggers a buffer overflow, aka "GDI Integer Overflow Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 12/09/2008. The weakness was shared 12/09/2008 by Jun Mao with iDefense as MS08-071 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2249 since 05/16/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35070 (MS08-071: Vulnerabilities in GDI+ Could Allow Remote Code Execution (956802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90469 (Microsoft Windows GDI+ Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-071)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-071 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6602.
