CA BrightStor Hierarchical Storage Manager up to 11.4 Agent Service sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in CA BrightStor Hierarchical Storage Manager up to 11.4. Affected is an unknown part of the component Agent Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in Computer Associates (CA) BrightStor Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) before r11.6 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via CsAgent service commands with opcodes (1) 0x07, (2) 0x08, (3) 0x09, (4) 0x1E, (5) 0x32, (6) 0x36, (7) 0x40, and possibly others.

The bug was discovered 09/26/2007. The weakness was disclosed 10/01/2007 by Aaron Portnoy (Website). The advisory is available at ca.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-5084 since 09/25/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26914 (BrightStor Hierarchical Storage Manager < r11.6 Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 11.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4922.
