Sun JDK/JRE up to 6u2 Access Restriction access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Java Web Start in Sun JDK and JRE 6 Update 2 and earlier does not properly enforce access restrictions for untrusted applications, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to read and modify local files via an untrusted application, aka "two vulnerabilities."

The bug was discovered 10/03/2007. The weakness was presented 10/05/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5237 since 10/05/2007. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32013 (GLSA-200804-20 : Sun JDK/JRE: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115677 (Oracle Java Web Start Relating to Local File Access Multiple Security Vulnerabilities (1000634.1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36945) and Tenable (32013). See 3639, 3636, 3640 and 3642 for similar entries.
