EMC RepliStor 6.1.3 recv memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in EMC RepliStor 6.1.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function recv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The RepliStor Server Service in EMC Replistor 6.1.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a size value that causes RepliStor to create a smaller buffer than expected, which triggers a buffer overflow when that buffer is used in a recv function call.

The weakness was released 10/10/2007 by Aaron Portnoy with TippingPoint (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5323 since 10/10/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (37075).
