PHP 5.2.4 ActiveX Control wscript.shell os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.2.4 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality in the library compatui.dll of the file wscript.shell of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Component Object Model (COM) functions in PHP 5.x on Windows do not follow safe_mode and disable_functions restrictions, which allows context-dependent attackers to bypass intended limitations, as demonstrated by executing objects with the kill bit set in the corresponding ActiveX control Compatibility Flags, executing programs via a function in compatUI.dll, invoking wscript.shell via wscript.exe, invoking Scripting.FileSystemObject via wshom.ocx, and adding users via a function in shgina.dll, related to the com_load_typelib function.

The weakness was shared 10/23/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5653. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/29/2021). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1202 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28181 (PHP < 5.2.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37368) and Tenable (28181). The entries 3287, 3284, 3285 and 3282 are related to this item.
