IBM Lotus Notes up to 7.0.0 Shared Memory access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM Lotus Notes up to 7.0.0 (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Shared Memory. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

IBM Lotus Notes before 6.5.6, and 7.x before 7.0.3; and Domino before 6.5.5 FP3, and 7.x before 7.0.2 FP1; uses weak permissions (Everyone:Full Control) for memory mapped files (shared memory) in IPC, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information, or inject Lotus Script or other character sequences into a session.

The bug was discovered 10/23/2007. The weakness was shared 10/29/2007 by Ollie Whitehouse with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5544 since 10/18/2007. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27574 (IBM Lotus Notes / Domino Client Memory Mapped Files Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 7.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11518.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37361) and Tenable (27574). The entries 39455, 39454 and 39447 are related to this item.
