Fabrice Bellard QEMU 0.8.2 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 0.8.2 (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in QEMU 0.8.2, as used in Xen and possibly other products, allows local users to execute arbitrary code via crafted data in the "net socket listen" option, aka QEMU "net socket" heap overflow. NOTE: some sources have used CVE-2007-1321 to refer to this issue as part of "NE2000 network driver and the socket code," but this is the correct identifier for the individual net socket listen vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 11/01/2007. The weakness was presented 05/01/2007 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5730 since 10/30/2007. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79446 (OracleVM 2.1 : xen (OVMSA-2008-2003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117309 (CentOS Security Update for xen (CESA-2008:0194)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38239) and Tenable (79446). See 36553, 36552, 36551 and 39487 for similar entries.
