IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 swcons link following

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component swcons. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

cfgcon in IBM AIX 5.2 and 5.3 does not properly validate the argument to the "-p" option to swcons, which allows local users in the system group to create an arbitrary file, and enable world writability of this file, via a symlink attack involving use of the file s name as the argument. NOTE: this issue is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2007-5804.

The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was disclosed 11/05/2007 by Alex DeLarge (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www14.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-5805 since 11/05/2007. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/03/2019). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1861 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (38154). The entries 3421, 3428, 3427 and 3424 are pretty similar.
