A vulnerability was found in Larry Wall Perl up to 5.8.6 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file regcomp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the polymorphic opcode support in the Regular Expression Engine (regcomp.c) in Perl 5.8 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code by switching from byte to Unicode (UTF) characters in a regular expression.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was published 11/07/2007 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5116 since 09/27/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67586 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : perl (ELSA-2007-0966)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115676 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2007-009 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-12-17)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38270) and Tenable (67586). Similar entries are available at 3475, 35351, 39604 and 39603.
