Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 setuid Program memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component setuid Program. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The kernel in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.10 does not reset the current Mach Thread Port or Thread Exception Port when executing a setuid program, which allows local users to execute arbitrary code by creating the port before launching the setuid program, then writing to the address space of the setuid process.

The bug was discovered 11/14/2007. The weakness was published 11/14/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (Sean) with RISE Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3749 since 07/12/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28212 (Mac OS X < 10.4.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115661 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-11-14)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38466) and Tenable (28212). Similar entries are available at 1498, 3185, 3342 and 3343.
