Samba up to 3.0.25 WINS Server reply_netbios_packet memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Samba up to 3.0.25 (File Transfer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function reply_netbios_packet of the component WINS Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the reply_netbios_packet function in nmbd/nmbd_packets.c in nmbd in Samba 3.0.0 through 3.0.26a, when operating as a WINS server, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted WINS Name Registration requests followed by a WINS Name Query request.

The bug was discovered 11/15/2007. The weakness was published 11/16/2007 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5398 since 10/12/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63844 (RHEL 4 : samba (RHSA-2007:1034)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185035 (HP-UX Running HP CIFS Server (Samba) Remote Execution of Arbitrary Code Vulnerabiity (HPSBUX02316)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11906.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38502) and Tenable (63844). Similar entries are available at 3460, 35351, 39605 and 39604.
