The EPSF pipe support in enscript 1.6.3 allows remote attackers or local users to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters.
The bug was discovered 01/21/2005. The weakness was presented 05/13/2009 with Apple as HT3549 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-1184 since 12/13/2004. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
