MIT Kerberos 5-1.5 lib/kdb/kdb_default.c krb5_def_store_mkey memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.5 (Network Authentication Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function krb5_def_store_mkey in the library lib/kdb/kdb_default.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Double free vulnerability in the krb5_def_store_mkey function in lib/kdb/kdb_default.c in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.5 has unknown impact and remote authenticated attack vectors. NOTE: the free operations occur in code that stores the krb5kdc master key, and so the attacker must have privileges to store this key.

The weakness was published 12/08/2007 with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at issues.rpath.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5972 since 11/14/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/29/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29991 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : krb5 (krb5-4851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:002)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38917) and Tenable (29991). Similar entries are available at 3410, 3547, 37647 and 39622.
