A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SourceFire ClamAV 0.92 (Anti-Malware Software). Affected by this issue is the function cli_gentempfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. ClamAV 0.92 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on (1) temporary files used by the cli_gentempfd function in libclamav/others.c or on (2) .ascii files used by sigtool, when utf16-decode is enabled.

The weakness was shared 12/31/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-6595. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
