A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 8 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4, 6, 6 SP1, and 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted data stream header that triggers memory corruption, aka "Data Stream Header Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 10/13/2009 with Microsoft as MS09-054 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1547. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42110 (MS09-054: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (974455)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90545 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS09-054)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS09-054 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8651.
