GNU FreeRADIUS up to 0.9.2 Attribute Attachment memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNU FreeRADIUS up to 0.9.2 (Network Authentication Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Attribute Attachment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

rad_decode in FreeRADIUS 0.9.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a short RADIUS string attribute with a tag, which causes memcpy to be called with a -1 length argument, as demonstrated using the Tunnel-Password attribute.

The bug was discovered 11/20/2003. The weakness was published 11/21/2003 by Evgeny Legerov e.legerov@s-quadra.com as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0967 since 11/26/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67926 (Oracle Linux 5 : freeradius (ELSA-2009-1451)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.freeradius.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 7 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (23391), Tenable (67926), SecurityFocus (BID 9079†), OSVDB (2850†) and Secunia (SA10271†). Further details are available at freeradius.org. Similar entry is available at VDB-415.
