A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris Libfont up to 1.4.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Libraries. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in (1) X.Org Xserver before 1.4.1, and (2) the libfont and libXfont libraries on some platforms including Sun Solaris, allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PCF font with a large difference between the last col and first col values in the PCF_BDF_ENCODINGS table.
The bug was discovered 01/17/2008. The weakness was shared 01/18/2008 by regenrecht with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-0006 since 12/03/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67644 (Oracle Linux 5 : libXfont (ELSA-2008-0064)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116075 (HP-UX Running Xserver, Arbitrary Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (HPSBUX02381)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4661.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39767) and Tenable (67644). The entries 40633, 40632, 40631 and 40630 are related to this item.
