The SingleSignOn Valve (org.apache.catalina.authenticator.SingleSignOn) in Apache Tomcat before 5.5.21 does not set the secure flag for the JSESSIONIDSSO cookie in an https session, which can cause the cookie to be sent in http requests and make it easier for remote attackers to capture this cookie.
The weakness was released 01/22/2008 as Bug 41217 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at issues.apache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-0128. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.004.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46869 (Apache Tomcat 6.x < 6.0.9 Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165709 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2008:005)).
Upgrading to version 5.5.20 eliminates this vulnerability.
