A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Web Wiz NewsPad 1.02. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file rte_file_browser.asp. The manipulation of the argument sub
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in RTE_file_browser.asp in Web Wiz NewsPad 1.02 allows remote attackers to list arbitrary directories, and .txt and .zip files, via a .....\\\ in the sub parameter.
The weakness was published 01/29/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0479 since 01/29/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by BugReport.IR and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:rte_file_browser.asp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
